День Гідності та Свободи
Dignity and
Freedom Day is a public
holiday in Ukraine, celebrated on November 21. This holiday was established by
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on November 13, 2014 to commemorate the
anniversary of the Euromaidan protests.
Euromaidan
was a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine, beginning on November
21, 2013. People from all Ukrainian cities and towns came to Maidan
Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) to protest against the refusal of the
Ukrainian government to sign the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement.
The protest gradually turned into a revolution, resulting in overthrow of
President Viktor Yanukovych.
This
revolution played an important role in self-determination of Ukrainians. They
demonstrated their desire for freedom and unwillingness to tolerate
infringement of their rights and dignity. The anniversary of the revolution
became a public holiday in Ukraine. Observation of this public holiday will
keep the importance of these events for the future generation.
