Ukraine is a part of  Eastern Europe. The entire country has got a total land area of 603,628 km2. This makes Ukraine by far the biggest country in Europe. The population density is currently at approximately 73 people per square kilometer.
Ukraine is a  unitary state  comprised of 24 provinces. It also has the Crimean Peninsula and 2 cities with very special status.
Sevastopol is located on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula. It is the largest port in Ukraine. 

The population of Ukraine is 43,802,666a 

Ukrainians make up almost 77.8% of the total population, while Russians take the second spot with almost 17% of the population. Other minorities include Belarusians 0.6%, Bulgarians 0.4%,
Hungarians 0.3%, Crimean Tatars 0.5%, while Romanians and Poles both are 0.3% and Jewish residents make up 0.2% of the
total population. Other minorities present are 1.8%.

The major language is Ukrainian, spoken by 67% of the population, while the second most common language is Russian, spoken by 24% of the total population. The remaining 9% is comprised of various other languages.The literacy rate is excellent - 99.7%. Almost 14% of the population is ages 0-14, while 12% is 15-24 years of age. And
57% of the population is 25-64 years of age, while 15% is 65 years and over.

Climate

The climate of Ukraine is temperate continental. The only exception is the southern coast of Crimea, where the climate is subtropical of the Mediterranean type. Warm low-snow winters and rainy summers are specific to the mild climate of the Zakarpattia region.

Average winter temperatures in Ukraine vary from -8 to -12oC.

The average summer temperature ranges from 18 to 25oC.

Frequent weather fronts bring weather changes. Note, however, that clear, sunny weather is typical for Ukraine (up to 230 sunny days per year).

Geographical location of Ukraine

Ukraine is situated in the central part of Eastern Europe.

Ukraine borders on Belarus to the north, Russia to the east, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea to the south, Moldova and Romania to the southwest, and Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland to the west. In the far southeast, Ukraine is separated from Russia by the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea.

Having the total area of 603,700 sq.km, Ukraine is one of the biggest countries of Europe.  The country is subdivided into 24 regions (oblasts) and the Crimea - autonomous republic.  The capital is Kyiv.

Mountains occupy only 5% of Ukrainian territory: the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains in the west and the Crimean mountains in the south. The highest peak in Ukraine, Goverla Mountain (2,061 m), is situated in the Carpathians. The largest rivers in Ukraine (Dnieper and Danube rivers) are navigable.

More than 20,000 water reservoirs are situated in Ukraine, including more than 3,000 lakes. One of the largest is Lake Svityaz, 28 square km in area, in the northwest.
